What is Ketamine Infusion Therapy

Ketamine infusion therapy helps with several psychiatric conditions, but it is most commonly used in those with treatment-resistant depression, a form of major depressive disorder. You are likely to be diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression if you have tried more than two antidepressant treatments and have not responded adequately.

When used to treat mood disorders, a much lower dose of ketamine is administered so patients are conscious and awake the entire time. Every clinic has different protocols. At KCS, patients receive a series of six 60-minute infusions over 2-3 weeks in a state-of-the-art facility staffed with world-class experts.

Many patients experience significant relief from symptoms after just one infusion. However, the majority require at least three infusions before improvement, and others only benefit after completing the entire series of six, sometimes weeks later. It’s crucial to complete the whole series for maximum effect and duration of relief.

We Offer Ketamine Infusions for These Conditions

Depression

depression

Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide, but sadly, many individuals affected by it do not seek assistance due to feelings of isolation and shame. Although depression itself may not be curable, its symptoms can be managed with the right treatment approach.

Ketamine, a groundbreaking treatment option for depression, has emerged as a significant advancement in recent years.

Research shows that low-dose ketamine infusions can provide relief from depression symptoms in up to 75% of cases, highlighting the power of ketamine in transforming the lives of those suffering from depression.

The unique mechanism of action of ketamine sets it apart from traditional antidepressants. While most antidepressants work by modulating the levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine in the brain, ketamine targets the NMDA receptors and influences the release of glutamate. This action promotes the growth and repair of neural connections, ultimately leading to improvements in mood and overall mental health.. While the treatment protocol varies depending on the individual’s needs and response, it commonly consists of multiple infusions over a two-to-three-week period.

Anxiety

Ketamine Clinics surat  is recognized as one of the leading centers offering IV ketamine for anxiety treatment. Ketamine therapy has shown remarkable results for patients suffering from anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other types of mood disorders where anxiety is a prevalent symptom. It has also been effectively used for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) for many years.

Individuals with anxiety struggle to cope with the stressors of daily life, and many are unable to find relief with traditional treatments like medication and psychotherapy. Ketamine Infusion Therapy can have a calming effect on the mind and nervous system. As a result, the use of ketamine infusion for anxiety treatment can help many people get the relief they need, including those who do not respond to other treatment methods.

PTSD

post traumatic stress disorder

PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is a severe anxiety disorder that can develop following a traumatic event, often leading to difficulties in performing daily activities and feelings of isolation. Identifying the right treatment is essential in regaining control and alleviating symptoms.

Ketamine infusion therapy has emerged as an effective treatment for PTSD, offering rapid relief within hours or minutes compared to traditional medications, which can take weeks or months to produce noticeable results. Our clinic has witnessed remarkable improvements in patients who undergo ketamine treatment for PTSD, with many individuals reporting significant progress even after their first infusion. By harnessing the therapeutic potential of ketamine, individuals struggling with PTSD can find relief and regain control of their lives.

OCD

Ketamine is now being more commonly used at numerous mental health clinics to help people suffering from OCD. This could be a good option for those who suffer severely from OCD, for those who have tried ERP without success, or for those in situations with OCD and crippling depression. In these cases, ERP and ketamine should be used together. However, ERP therapy remains the best stand-alone treatment for most people with OCD.

Recent studies are showing when paired with psychotherapy, ketamine can be incredibly effective with longer lasting gains so constant dosing is not necessary. This is known as ketamine-assisted therapy (or KAP). Research studies are finding that ketamine-assisted therapy is useful for a number of problems including depression, PTSD, complex PTSD, race-based trauma, generalized anxiety disorder, substance abuse including alcoholism. and ADHD; gains are also seen for people with OCD

Migraine

How Does Ketamine Work on Migraines?

  •  With migraine headaches, a phenomenon known as “central sensitization” is believed to intensify pain by increasing the number of NMDA receptors – this ends up amplifying the pain signal. Ketamine is an antagonist at NMDA receptors, blocking the excitatory action of glutamate, a neurotransmitter long implicated in the induction of cortical spreading of the neurons that play a role in intractable headaches and migraines.

  • This “block and reset” of pain signaling, provides relief where other treatments have failed, and allows for “rebooting” of central pain centers and desensitization to peripheral pain signals.

  • Not a single other medication directly targets this mechanism. This NMDA antagonism attenuates, diminishes, and can shorten the pain experience for specific patients.

  • By resetting the NMDA receptors, a patient’s nervous system can begin to revert back to its original state.  This allows patients the ability to experience relief, as well as lower tolerance to other migraine and pain medications.  Patients get a second chance!

  • Ketamine also down-regulates other pain-modulating receptors of the sympathetic nervous system, including de-escalating the frequency of ion-gated Calcium channels in their synaptic firing of pain signals. This means that fewer peripheral pain signals will register or be experienced by the patient. This effect is particularly pronounced in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, where it decreases the frequency of channel opening and duration of time spent in the active, open state.

  • Ketamine promotes an improved production of our natural neural-repair enzymes (BDNF). This enables our nervous system to heal, structurally, and remodel the nerves and pathways that have been causing excessive pain signaling.  This restructuring can assist patients in receiving long-lasting results!

  • Ketamine resets the “default mode network” in the brain. It is now believed that this area of the brain is responsible for part of what we refer to as the “mind-body connection.”  Dysregulation of the default mode network can result in increased pain from increased emotional stress and increased emotional stress from each pain signal.  This vicious cycle is one that individuals suffering with chronic pain are unfortunately very familiar with.  When ketamine resets this process like a circuit breaker, it can significantly reverse this cycle back to a healthy and balanced relationship.

Bipolar Disorder

One of the most powerful arguments for using ketamine for bipolar treatment is its rapid response. People with bipolar disorder face a rate of 20 times more than the general population for death by suicide.

Additionally, upwards of 25% of those with bipolar disorder are treatment-resistant, meaning at least two or more mood agents have failed.

It’s crucial to note that while ketamine infusion therapy may be effective in improving mood and reducing the severity of manic and depressive symptoms.

Chronic Pain

How does Ketamine relieve chronic pain?

  • With chronic pain, a phenomenon known as “central sensitization” is believed to intensify pain by increasing the number of NMDA receptors – this ends up amplifying the pain signal.  Ketamine’s interference with the NMDA receptor helps block and “reset” pain signaling, providing relief where other treatments have failed. This allows for “rebooting” of central pain centers and desensitization to peripheral pain signals.

  • Not a single other medication directly targets this mechanism. This NMDA antagonism attenuates, diminishes, and can shorten the pain experience for specific patients.

  • By resetting the NMDA receptors, a patient’s nervous system can begin to revert back to its original state.  This allows patients the ability to experience relief, as well as lower tolerance to other pain medications.  Patients get a second chance!  Imagine being able to remove or lower pain drug dosing, to a time before the body became physiologically dependent on narcotic drugs!

  • Ketamine also down-regulates other pain modulating receptors of the sympathetic nervous system, including de-escalating the frequency of ion-gated Calcium channels in their synaptic firing of pain signals. This means that fewer peripheral pain signals will register or be experienced by the patient.

  • Ketamine promotes an improved production of our natural neural-repair enzymes (BDNF).  This enables our nervous system to heal, structurally, and remodel the nerves and pathways that have been causing excessive pain signaling.  This restructuring can assist patients in receiving long-lasting results!

Substance/alcohol Abuse

  • Ketamine allows our brains the ability to “reboot” and repair the connections between nerve cells, called synapses. Substance and alcohol abuse can disrupt these healthy connections and degrade our ability to repair them.

  • Ketamine can reset the appropriate sensitivity of the reward areas of our brain.  Alcohol and substance abuse over-stimulate and desensitize this area, and result in lower enjoyment of healthy daily stimuli, as well as withdrawal symptoms.

  • Ketamine significantly decreases emotional and physical withdrawal symptoms.

  • Ketamine is an NMDA receptor antagonist.  This action decreases the GABA inhibition of glutamate synapses, allowing them to wake back up. This then increases our ability to feel reward, and a sense of well-being, from daily stimuli.

  • Ketamine Increases “Neuroplasticity” of nerve synapses.  This allows repair and regrowth into healthier signaling paradigms, resulting in improved mood and coping skills.

  • Ketamine allows for psychological healing of deep emotional conflicts. Our subconscious (which is our best friend and an infinitely wise processing system) can finally seek to safely process and resolve these conflicts, on our behalf.
